Support the 2025 HBCU Digital Fellowship Program
The Online News Association is an industry leader and innovator in providing effective and career-changing leadership development training and support. ONA’s commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion, and innovation is grounded in the sustainability of the journalism industry. Extensive research has repeatedly demonstrated a strong correlation between diversity and financial performance: companies with diverse leadership consistently outperform their peers in revenue generation and innovation (McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group). Equally important, diverse newsrooms build stronger audience trust and loyalty (World Economic Forum, Reuters Institute), an essential currency as media organizations work to rebuild public confidence in an era of heightened mis- and disinformation.
Now in its 11th year, the ONA HBCU Digital Media Fellowship has evolved into a proven talent pipeline connecting exceptional students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with career-defining opportunities in digital journalism. Fellows learn practical skills using the same tools and strategies driving success in today’s most innovative newsrooms. They receive personalized training from recognized leaders who work at the intersection of media and technology. Beyond technical skill-building, the program creates lasting professional relationships, connecting fellows with a network of mentors and industry contacts who remain invested in their journalistic journey long after graduation.
Expansion and Support in 2025
In 2025, the HBCU Digital Media Fellowship is expanding to amplify its impact and reach. This year’s cohort will embark on an expanded nine-month program that spans the 2025-2026 academic year.
Your support will allow fellows to:
- Create meaningful journalism projects based on their own interests, helping them build specific skills they’ll actually use in their careers.
- Get practical training on new digital tools and technologies that today’s newsrooms are looking for in job candidates.
- Connect with experienced journalists who provide ongoing advice and feedback throughout the program, helping fellows grow both their technical abilities and leadership potential.
- Share their work directly with the ONA community, getting real-world feedback and making valuable connections with industry professionals.
- Have their ONA25 conference experience fully covered, including registration, travel costs, and accommodations, plus a three-year ONA membership that keeps them connected to opportunities.
Support for this program includes branding as part of the official announcement, news, selection process, all-digital presence and on-site newsroom branding. Opportunity to directly connect with the selected participants is also included. Sponsor will also be branded as Patron or Supporter on the ONA website fellowship page.
